The Christmas list may have been discussed for weeks. But sitting down to write to Santa can bring out a few things you haven’t heard: why that particular present matters, what they hope to do with it, or a question they have been waiting to ask.
Some of it makes it onto the page. Some comes out while you are finding a pencil or hearing the story behind a drawing. Those small details can make the letter a lovely keepsake, and give you something to draw on when arranging a reply from Santa.
A little room for their wishes and questions
A wish often comes with a story. The art set might be for a comic they want to make; the football might be for games with a new friend. Hearing what they have in mind can tell you more than the name of the present alone.
Then there are the things they wonder about. How does Santa find a house without a chimney? Do the reindeer stop for a rest? Who reads the letters when he is out? A letter gives those questions a destination.
A few questions of your own might open up the conversation:
- “What would you like Santa to know about this year?”
- “What would you do first with the present you’re hoping for?”
- “Is there anything you have always wanted to ask him?”
The chat can take its own course. A proud moment, an unexpected wish or a very serious question about reindeer may be the part you remember long after Christmas.
There is something interesting about the conversation around a letter. In a small study of 26 families writing together, children offered more of their own thoughts in sessions with less direction from the adult. The researchers were looking at everyday letters, but the finding offers a lovely possibility for Christmas: you might discover something you wouldn’t have thought to ask.
It might be the reason behind a wish, a question about Santa or a small piece of news. Those are the details a parent can carry into a personalised reply—the things that make a child pause and think, “He remembered that.”

A reply that picks up where their letter left off
When Santa writes back, a familiar detail can make the letter feel meant for them. He might respond to a question they asked, mention the project they described or recognise something they were proud to share.
Their original letter is a useful starting point. A photo keeps their exact words handy, and a quick note can catch something lovely they said but never put on paper. A reply can share their excitement about a Christmas wish without promising a particular gift.
That is where our personalised letters from Santa come in. You tell Pip, our letter-writing helper, about your child and the details you would like Santa to include. You choose what to share, review the details, then read and approve the letter before checkout.
